Knitting on Top of The World with ARNE & CARLOS

- Greenland Edition!

We are excited to invite you to join ARNE & CARLOS on their new adventure expedition in Arctic waters -  ‘Knitting on Top of the World with ARNE & CARLOS - Greenland Edition’! Join us on this incredible expedition cruise to Greenland - on top of the world! Greenland is a breathtaking destination that promises adventure and serenity in equal measure! Nestled between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, this vast Danish island is a land of striking contrasts, where glaciers meet vibrant communities, and ancient traditions blend with modern life. Greenland is home to some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Picture yourself standing before the towering cliffs of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where massive icebergs calve from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. Explore the otherworldly beauty of the Midnight Sun shining over the rugged terrain of the Disko Island, surrounded by breathtaking fjords and vibrant wildlife.

Greenland's wildlife is as diverse as its landscapes. Keep your eyes peeled for whales breaching in the waters, musk oxen grazing on the tundra, and colorful seabirds nesting along the cliffs. Each encounter brings you closer to understanding this pristine environment and its inhabitants. Immerse yourself in the unique culture of Greenland, and discover the warm hospitality of the local Inuit communities and learn about their rich history and traditions. From traditional drum dancing to storytelling, every experience offers a glimpse into a way of life shaped by the Arctic environment. The craft traditions of the Inuit people are rich and diverse, reflecting their deep connection to the land and their way of life in the Arctic, and we will see their colurful traditional clothing, such as parkas and boots, often made from animal skins like seal and caribou. Skilled seamstresses use intricate sewing techniques, often incorporating decorative elements like beadwork and embroidery.

The tour will start with two nights nights in vibrant Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital. We have a full day to explore this fun and laid-back city, and the areas around. We will have a lovely Welcome dinner with ARNE & CARLOS, enjoying the Icelandic cuisine, which is is a delight for food lovers. Reykjavik boasts a thriving culinary scene, featuring everything from traditional dishes like lamb soup and fermented shark to modern twists on seafood and locally sourced ingredients.

The Greenland cruise starts from its captial Nuuk, which is a three our flight from Reykjavik. Upon our arrival in Nuuk, we will board the beautiful HX Expedition ship, MS Fridtjof Nansen - the newest addition to the HX fleet. The ship honors the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896).

Greenland will take your breath away. Surrounded by a vast network of glaciers and glittering fjords, MS Fridtjof Nansen will cruise past calving icebergs in Disko Bay, you can hike along pristine beaches and green valleys, and see photogenic wildlife. Experience Greenland’s culture and traditions as you visit colourful settlements and join exciting activities arranged by the ship's Expedition Team.

During the cruise, you will enjoy the company of your hosts ARNE & CARLOS, attend their interesting lectures, and take part in the exciting mystery knitalong! The trip of a lifetime – you don’t want to miss this opportunity!

Day 2              11 Jun 25 - Reykjavik  (B, L, D)

After breakfast, we meet in the lobby for a full day tour to see the sights of Reykjavik and get a taste of Iceland! In the evening we will have a Welcome Dinner with ARNE & CARLOS, and enjoy the excellent Icelandic cuisine.

Day 3              12 Jun 25 - Reykjavik to Nuuk, Greenland  (B, D)

We have an early start today as we depart Reykjavík for the three hour flight to Nuuk, which is Greenland’s colorful and compact capital. With a population of fewer than 20,000, Nuuk has a striking mix of old and modern buildings. In the old part of town by the waterfront, we can visit the Nuuk Cathedral and see the statues of Hans Egede as well as the beautiful Mother of the Sea statue standing in juxtaposition to the water below. Our expedition ship awaits in the picturesque harbour. After being welcomed aboard and collecting your complimentary expedition jacket, it is time to settle into our cabins. We will meet for a welcome onboard drink with ARNE & CARLOS, before sitting down to enjoy our first dinner onboard MS Fridtjof Nansen.

Day 4              13 Jun 25 -  At sea (B, L, D)

Getting ready for adventure and sailing towards the Arctic Circle, you will have time to get acquainted with the AECO rules and recommendations regarding operations and landings in the fragile Arctic environment. Make sure you attend these mandatory presentations if you want to join planned landings as we head north. Now is a good time to settle in and getting to know the ship, enjoy the ship’s state-of-the-art facilities and join the first lectures on Greenland-related topics, including the Citizen Science projects run on board the ship. At some point during the sailing, we will cross the Arctic Circle, entering the lands of the Midnight Sun at the height of summer.

Day 5             14 Jun 25 -  Iluissat Icefjord (B, L, D)

Today, we reach Disko Bay, a haven for whales and other wildlife. The water here is dotted with icebergs in many shapes and sizes, and they all come from one place – the Ilulissat Icefjord. This spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site regularly tops the list of things to see and do in Greenland. Today, you’ll find out why. Enjoy the scenery as you walk along the wooden gangway to the breathtaking ice fjord.
Marvel at giant icebergs floating placidly in the deep blue water as they take on different hues of white, gray and blue. All photographers, regardless of skill, will return to the ship with enviable images. Back in pretty Ilulissat, visit the Icefjord Centre to learn about the ice in this fascinating area. You can also go on a hike to Sermermiut to take in incredible views.

Day 6-7                15-16 Jun 25   - Exploring Uummannaq Fjord (B, L, D)

Deep dive into Arctic life  - beyond the Nuussuaq peninsula, where distances start to mean everything, because this is where Greenland’s ‘Far North’ begins. At this latitude, life proceeds at a slower pace. Weather and ice conditions run the show, and any successful landing that we attempt depends on the ability of the captain to safely navigate waterways – especially when a summer fog descends. All in all, it is the perfect setting for our expedition. The beauty of the land and the relative productivity of the environment here have attracted people since the first settlers came down the coast more than 4,000 years ago. Intriguing archaeological sites are silent witnesses to the ability of Arctic people to thrive in such a harsh environment. It is in this area that the famed Qilakitsoq mummies were discovered.
Potential activities around here include stops at small communities such as Uummannaq – a beautiful island town with a heart-shaped mountain – or Ukkusissat. We may visit the archaeological site of Qilakitsok, go on nature landings or attempt ice-cruising in the inner fjords with the small boats (RIBs).

Day 8-10                17-19 Jun 25   -  Disko Bay (B, L, D)

We are gettting closer to the awesome power of nature, and the beautiful ice sculptures of Disko Bay. Grandeur is the key word here. Disko Bay is one of those places that people dream about. And with good reason – the deep blue waters here are scattered with icebergs in all shapes and sizes. Some of them are truly immense, weighing over seven million tons, and the ice fjord pumps out more water in the form of glacial ice in a day than New York City uses in a year. Traditional communities, massive glaciers, and seemingly endless stretches of wilderness await us during our exploration of the region. Over the next days, we aim to show you the wonders of the bay, including Vaigat Sound, Disko Island, and the eastern fjords. Of course, Mother Nature has the upper hand, so we have to be ready for adjustment of plans according to the local weather and ice conditions. There will be nature landings in the small boats, cruising in between floes and icebergs, spotting whales from the deck, and listening to interesting talks by the Expedition Team.

Day 11-12             20-21 Jun 25   - Landscapes and communities of West Greenland (B, L, D)

The central west coast of Greenland is a land of contrasts. It is home to some of the longest fjords in the country and a sprinkling of settlements, including the second-largest town on the island. However, the vastness of the land makes this stretch of the coast a sparsely populated region, where huge distances are the norm, and the sense of remoteness and isolation is just a part of daily life.
On our journey south, we will visit communities where traditions are still alive, including Sisimiut, which lies 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This modern town has grown up alongside very ancient remains that date back more than 4,000 years. If you want to learn more about the ancient Saqqaq culture, make sure to visit the interesting local museum. If you’re looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat or mittens made of qiviut, the inner wool of a musk ox, which is said to be 10 times warmer than sheep wool.

Day 13              22 Jun 25  - Back to Nuuk and onwards to Reykjavik (B, D)

Today, as we arrive at Nuuk, you will say a fond farewell to MS Fridtjof Nansen, her crew, the Expedition Team and the new friends you will have made. The lively capital of Greenland is a metropolis compared to all other towns you have visited in the country over the last couple of weeks. From here we will catch a flight back to Reykjavik, and check into the hotel and the afternoon is at your leisure to enjoy Reykajvik. In the evening, we will enjoy a Farewell Dinner with ARNE & CARLOS and also celebrate Arne's birthday!

Day 14              23 Jun 25  - Reykjavik - end of tour (B, D)

After breakfast, check out from the hotel, and continue with your onward travels.
